Business Counseling
w
hen it comes to providing expert advice to aspiring entrepreneurs, early-stage small business, and mid-sized companies, the EDC offers counseling services through our long-standing partnership with the Missouri Small Business and Technology Development Center.
The SBTDC is a cooperative initiative between the University of Missouri Extension and the U.S. Small Business Administration.
The SBTDC office in the EDC facility assists thousands of area residents each year who are thinking to start a new business as well as owners of existing businesses. While many people are interested in becoming an entrepreneur, the SBTDC believes there are four crucial things that distinguish new businesses that will succeed from those who won’t:
- Preparing a written, detailed business plan up-front
- Willingness to seek assistance in areas where help is needed
- Ability to let go and manage people
- Resources
Along with providing individual consulting, the SBTDC can also help by offering performance assessments, business acquisition and growth evaluations, financial analysis, technology access, and marketing plans for entering local, state, national and international markets.

Another business counseling resource available at the EDC is the volunteer office staffed by SCORE, the Service Corps of Retired Executives.
The St. Louis Chapter of SCORE is part of a national non-profit association dedicated to entrepreneur education and the formation, growth, and success of the nation’s small businesses. SCORE volunteers serve as “Counselors to America’s Small Business” and offer expertise in areas such as accounting, finance, marketing, management and business plan preparation.
